2016 Throne

A gilded throne (created after the presidential election of 2016) rises anemically in Giacometti-style.The gold moments reveal a two-faced attempt to gild the moment and make it grander than its industrial and grim reality.

"I’m invested in the history of sculpture and what it means to make objects and figures in these uncertain times. My Blue Angels (crushed, folded powder-coated aluminum and stainless-steel sculptures) were a response to the cultural instability and violence of present-day America [Simon Preston Gallery (2011), Galerie Christophe Gaillard (2012)]. I imagined Blue Angels to be a hybrid of airplane wings, wilted petals, and broken bird feathers. As a woman artist, I’m interested in taking masculine and monolithic Minimalist material and formand rendering it vulnerable. The same applies to Flags, where I strived to expose patriotism and power within thefetishistic American flag-waving culture and reimagine it as a cultural SOS cryfor help. The industrial lead sheets wrapped around these structures becomefragile and organic. My suspended ropes cast in crystal are at the same timeboth lithe chandeliers, and limp, hung, invisible figures.
