A piece called Your Board, by Michelle Lopez and now showing in her solo at Simon Preston Gallery on New York’s Lower East Side. Lopez works in abstraction, with obvious roots in a slightly corrupted minimalism – John McCracken’s pristine planks meet the smashed cars of John Chamberlain, as the press release points out. But her works can also have a witty leverage on the everyday. As its title suggests, Your Board is made from the same wood as a skateboard deck, enlarged to the size of one of its riders, and as slouchy as one. And this sculpture’s elegant, twinkling gray surface is the same gritty sandpaper that gives grip to skater kids’ shoes.
